Breeders - who has to register?

If you sell a dog or cat you’ve bred, you must be registered as a breeder in Dogs and Cats Online and pay the breeder registration fee. This includes anyone selling puppies or kittens from 'accidental' litters.

Breeder registration runs from 1 July to 30 June each year.  The Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) breeder number is not transferrable, that is it can’t be used by more than one person.

Breeder registration exempts your dogs and/or cats from the mandatory desexing law. If you're no longer registered as a breeder (and no other exemption applies) then you must desex your dogs/cats.

If you are giving an animal up in exchange of services or goods rather than montetary funds, you must register as a breeder. However if you give the animal away, receiving nothing in return (give for 'free'), then you are not required to register as a breeder.
