Bird Flu

South Australia has confirmed its first detections of H5 bird flu.  

Overseas outbreaks show us that cats and dogs can be infected, however, there is no evidence of this happening in Australia.  

There are actions you can take to keep your pets safe: 

  • keep dogs and cats from roaming to minimise their contact with wild birds
  • keep dogs on a lead, especially in wildlife areas
  • keep dogs away from sick or dead birds
  • clean your shoes thoroughly after walking your dog in a wildlife area
  • always follow good hygiene practices. 

If your dog or cat is sick and showing signs consistent with bird flu, or has had contact with sick or dead birds, please phone your private veterinarian. 

All South Australians are reminded to: Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and other animals. Record what you see. Report it to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
